CHALLENGING QUESTIONS OF THE DAY

1. Do you teach a person to swim by lecturing at them and by showing videos?  Then why is English taught this way?

2. People learn best by using English in authentic situations, so why are we still emphasizing rote-memorization and test taking skills?

3. Can a student learn English when the Korean, and not the English language, is used by the educator?  Why is this still done in 2016?

4. Why do students cheat?

5. Why do Koreans go overseas, sometimes for several years, but return knowing nothing about the hot county's culture and language?

FRIENDS SEASON 7, EPISODE 1 THE ONE WITH MONICA'S THUNDER.

VOCABULARY

1.  Whack!
When you don’t like something, you can call it whack, like: "That video game is whack", because it’s a bad video game.

2.  'Sup?
Abbreviated version of what's up? to find out what is new in their life.  If you see a buddy, instead of saying: "Hi, how are you"?, you can ask: "'Sup?" An appropriate answer would be: "Nothing much."

3.  To steal thunder
To take the attention away from something or someone, like when Monica was all excited about her engagement party, and then she saw Ross and Rachel kissing, she thought that they were trying to take the attention away from her, thus, stealing her thunder.

4.  Kick your ass.  
To beat up someone, to fight.  If you want to challenge someone to a fight, you can say: " I am going to kick your ass." Also, if you like something, you can say that it kicks ass; "The move, the Day After Tomorrow, really kicked ass."

5.  Big Talk. 
All talk and no action.  Someone has a lot to say, but doesn't back up their words.  If a person is insecure, they will say many things, but won't really follow up on what they have said.

6.  Come on. 
If you do not believe someone, you can say: "Oh, come on, you are a big, fat, liar".

7.  You bolt the door.
You use some tools, like a hammer, nails, or screws and screwdriver (or your hands) to keep the door closed.  (In Friends, Chandler was scared of the neighbour that Monica pissed off (made angry), so he told his buddies to bolt the door (keep it shut), so he could prevent the angry  nieghbour from entering their apartment.

8.  Chiming in.
To interrupt the speech of others, especially with an unwanted opinion. Also, to join in harmoniously.  To go together harmoniously; agree.

9.  You are on your own.
I am not going to support you.  Usually said to someone if their words or action were inappropriate.

10.  Playing a joke on him.  To make fun of someone.  To make a farce out of someone in a particular situation.

11.  Know what I mean?!
Perhaps said sarcastically when you want someone to understand you or agree with you about something slightly negative, or silly.

12.  Let's do it!  
To complete an action with another person. Can also mean, let's “hit a home run”.

13.  Biology failed me.  
Something doesn't work with your body. Chandler couldn't do it, because he drank too much champagne, so he said: "In high school I failed biology, and now, biology has failed me!

14.  You're made of wood.
Chandler said this, because wood is always strong and hard. He was making a cold joke about his problem.

15.  Bonus night.
This is when an ex-boyfriend and ex-girlfriend become intimate after they have broken up.

16.  Yeah, I guess.
Tell, I suppose so; yes, I sort of agree.  Said in a situation when one may not be willing, or is unhappy with the result or outcome.

17.  Shake it off.
Said when one has something bothering them, so another person will try to help them feel better. Maybe another girl talks to your boyfriend and this bothers you (makes you jealous,) so you try to shake it off; make the bad feeling go away.

18.  Stuff.
Said when you do not really want others to understand or hear what you really mean.  Can also have romantic undertones; Rachel told Ross he was good at the stuff; romantically.  Stuff can also mean things.

19.  Way to go guys.
Congratulations hands, or amazing work hands, because Rachel told Ross that she liked his hands in bed.  You can also say way to go to congratulate someone on a job well done.

20.  Break up.
When a couple stops going out/dating.  Rachel and Ross are no longer boyfriend and girlfriend.  They have broken up.

21.  No strings attached.
When a 2 people are in a causal relationship, this can mean that there is no real commitment.  They can see each other without really calling themselves boyfriend and girlfriend. A relationship minus the hang-ups and restrictions.

22.  Dude.
A friend, or a way to call a guy; hey man, hey dude.

23.  On a scale from one to ten.
When you want to judge something, 1 being the lowest, and ten being the highest. Lots of guys will say, that girl is an 8, meaning she is really hot or pretty.

24.  Man child.
A grown man who is really immature, or childish.  Has yet to develop mentally, like Joey.

25.  Kind of.
When you are not sure, or do not want to tell the truth, you can say this.

26.  Incident.
A definite and separate occurrence; an event.  A usually minor event or condition that is subordinate to another.  Something contingent on or related to something else.  An occurrence or event that interrupts normal procedure or precipitates a crisis: an international incident.

27.  Check this out.
To take a look, see something, realise something.

28.  Pound on you a little.
To hit or beat someone a bit.

29.  Opened the door to the past.
When Monica saw Ross and Rachel kissing, she saw what they used to do in the past, so opening the door was like looking into the past.

30.  Getting back together.
After a couple has broken up, they might try to make things work again, by seeing each other once again.

31.  I swear.
To promise.

32.  Make a big deal out of this.
To exaggerate or highlight something, a situation or experience.

33.  Aw, crap.
Oh darn, dam it oh no, oh darn it.  Said when something goes wrong.

34.  Mai-Tai.
A cocktail made with rum, curaro, and fruit juices.  Also, in the Tahitian language (spoken in Tahiti, maitai means: good.)

35.  Take it away.
Said to someone when you do not want something anymore.  Maybe said to a waiter if the food sucks (tastes bad).

36.  Guess who?
Do you know who it is?  Maybe your pal will come up behind you, put their hands over your eyes, and say: "Guess who"?

37.  Left some stuff up in the air.
Some things were not spoken. An unfinished conversation or statement.

38.  Who cares?
Said when you are not concerned.  "Do you think my hair looks nice?"  If you do not want to waste your time with this sort of thing, tell your friend;  "Who cares?"

39.  Bonjour Mouseir!
Hello Mister in French.  Monica said this to Chandler, pretending they were in Paris.

40.  There is too much wisdom in there.
Because Joey is 32 years old, his eyes do not look like a 19 year old's, so Phoebe said that his eyes reveal his intelligence, or experience.

41.  They break your heart, don't they?
Watching the actions of a couple can make you heartsick, missing the feeling of love.

42.  Get rid of.
To discard or throw something away.

43.  Sweet 16.
A special birthday part for a 16 year old girl.

44.  Caricaturist.
Someone who parodies in an exaggerated manner; hired by Monica’s parents for her sweet 16, to ensure a lively party.

45.  3rd base.
First base is when a couple kisses.  The more that happens, the more bases are scores, until the couple “hits a home run”.  Can also mean, the third of the bases on the diamond counter clockwise from home plate; the last base to be reached by a runner before home plate.  The position played by the third baseman.

46.  Mimey
A mime is someone who paints his face white, will not speak, and imitates your every action.  So, to make fun of someone who copies you, you can call then mimey.

47.  The moment has passed.
You had your chance, and now the chance is gone.

48.  Made out.  Kissed.

49.  Got me?
If you do not have an answer, instead of saying, I do not know, you can say: "Got me?"

50.  Getting together.
To meet someone. To begin dating someone, or to see someone romantically.

51.  I'm calling it off.
 I am cancelling the experience, or situation.  To save his pride, Ross called off bonus night.

52.  Way to save your dignity my man.
By refusing to sleep with Rachel, Ross was able to maintain his esteem or respect. "Way to" can be a way for a friend to push you along, as in: "Way to go, your test scores were great!"

53. Take away from (your night).
When someone does not want to steal the thunder, or distract others from your special night or experience.

54.  Resentful.
 Angry or jealous towards someone or something.

55.  Can't stand the fact.
Do not like an experience, situation.  Really do not like it.

56Everybody wins.
Nobody loses, everyone is a winner.

57Yeah, you like that baby?
Said when you are courting or flirting.  Maybe a boyfriend or girlfriend will say that when kissing, or trying to go to 2nd base.

58.  Take off.
To leave, go away, depart.

59.  What can I say?
When you want to be humble, but you are proud, you can say this.  Carol:  “Michael, your song sounds great!”  Michael: “What can I say, I know I am good!”

60.  These bad boys.
Ross was referring to his hands when he said this.

61.  The Plaza.
This is a famous hotel in New York City’s Broadway Theater Distract.  Also known as the Milford Plaza Hotel.

  3. Cushions the blow: Eases the pain, makes it easy to hear.

  5. A puff:  To inhale cigar or cigarette smoke into your mouth/lungs.
  6. Thumb:  The thick smaller finger on the outside of the hand.
  7. Index finger: Our first finger.
  8. Decaf: An abbreviation for decaffeinated coffee.  Take the caffeine out of the coffee.
  9. Cappuccino:  Italian coffee; coffee with a shot of espresso added, topped with whip cream. 
  10. Coffee black (black coffee): Coffee without sugar and milk or cream; straight.
  11. Latte: Coffee made with milk instead of water.
  12. Easy!: Ross said this to Phoebe to tell her to take it easy; to calm down.
  13. Satin’s minions at work again: The devil’s assistants doing something evil.
  14. We’re with you, we got it:  We clearly understand.  Monica said this so Phoebe would stop talking and being annoying with her bizarre was of speaking.
  15. Karmic:  Chance, fate, destiny, karma, fortune, luck, coincident, accident, kismet.
  16. Gross: Disgusting.
  17. Putting it out:  To stub out a cigar or cigarette.  To smash up in an ashtray.
  18. Let me figure it out: Allow me to understand and know what is going on.
  19. All over him:  Asking him many questions, bugging him, vying for his attention.
  20. Coyotes picking off weak members of the herd: Coyotes, African animals of the canine family often hunt for and go after sick, young, or old members of a group of antelope or water buffalo.

  22. Looking out after you: Monica’s friends were just taking care of her.
  23. Slimmer: Not much chance of that happening.
  24. Filter tip little buddy: Cigarette.
  25. Alan Bashing: Complain, make-fun of, or to say bad things about Allan, Monica’s date.
  26. Who’s gonna take the first shot: Who is going to say something negative first?
  27. Come on!: Hurry, go on, quickly, just do it!!
  28. I’ll go:  Now I will speak.
  29. Yard Stick: A ruler that is about a meter long.
  30. I’d marry him for his David Hasselhoff impression alone:  Chandler loved Allan’s imitation of the star of Night Rider and Baywatch so much that he would marry him only because of this.
  31. Tasmanian Devil: A small black animal from the Australian island state of Tasmania that is also a character in Bug Bunny cartoons which has A.D.D.
  32. Hasidic Jewelers:  A cult-like and very religious kind of Jewish person who makes jewellery.
  33. We sure showed those Hasidic Jewelers a thing or two about softball:  We taught them a lesson.  We instructed them on how to play softball.  We beat them.  We were the better team.
  34. Innate:  Inborn, nature, instinctive, inherent, intrinsic.
  35. A gallon: A liquid measurement used in the American measurement system.  Non-metric.
  36. Saltines:  A kind of cracker.
  37. Tiny little hitchhiker: Hitchhikers (people who try to get a free ride at the side of the road) will stick out their thumb as an indication to drivers that they are requesting a lift in their vehicle.
  38. Maybe it’s a contest, like collect all five:  In a contest, sometimes you need to acquire five of a set, like four fingers and a thumb.
  39.  Knuckle-cracking:  To pull finger joints out of their sockets, which creates a cracking sound.
  40.  Endearing:  Appealing, charming, attractive, and engaging. 
  41.  The hair comes out and the gloves come off: When women fight, they take their hair down out of their ponytail, and when guys fight for real in a hockey match, they may take or throw off their gloves and hit each other with their fists.
  42. A cow got through:  A boyfriend ([cow] a female of the herd) made it through (survived) the friends (coyotes).
  43.  Dump him:  Let him go, break up with him, split up, get rid of.
  44. Feel the thing: Feel the sparks, feel the attraction.

  45. The bottom line:  The end result, finally, game over.
  46. Gee:  Oh, uh-huh, OK.
  47. Put it like that before: Said it like that.  No one has ever uttered it in that manner/fashion previously.
  48. Lamb Chop: A puppet show.
  49. Nicotine Patch: Like a bandage with the ingredients of a cigarette that you put on your arm and the nicotine seeps into your pours, but bypasses the harmful effects of the smoke from a cigarette.  Used by those trying to quit smoking.
  50. Pop Tart: A sweet candy like cookie-cracker often eaten for breakfast.
  51. Déjà vu:  When an occurrence seems like it is repeating itself.
  52. To let your guard down:  In the beginning of a relationship, you don’t let the other person know everything about you, but once you start to trust them, you open up and stop being so defensive.  You begin to fall in love.
  53. Can’t stand: Unable to endure or handle.
  54. To row like a Viking: Vikings were very large and tough men from Scandinavia who terrorized Europe around the years 900-1200.  They also went to Newfoundland, Canada, around 1100AD.  Vikings were able to row their boats with brute force so the boats sailed quickly.

SEASON ONE, EPISODE TWO, THE ONE WITH THE SONOGRAM AT THE END

VOCABUARY

  1. Opening act:
  2. Mastodon:  A kind of dog.
  3. To catch up: Meet someone you have not seen in a while and talk about what is new in your lives.
  4. Three’s Company: A popular American comedy show from the 1970s and 1980s, staring John Ritter and Suzanne Summers.  Three’s company and four is a crowd.
  5. To fluff: Ruffle, plump up, tousle, rumple.  To hit the pillows and make them comfortable.
  6. Ammunition: Things or words to use against someone.
  7. Thigh Master: A home exercise tool or device used to strengthen and tone your upper legs.
  8. Doy and Dinah: Just made up words.
  9. Sonogram: A medical machine used to look at a baby in the mother’s womb.
  10. To have a thing for someone: To be romantically interested and attracted to someone.
  11. On my part: On my behalf.
  12. To take the heat off: Take the pressure off.  To cease the attention being focused.
  13. The club (house): A place where rich people meet to drink, talk or make deals and partnerships.
  14. To leave a man (or woman) at the alter: Run away from the wedding at the last second/moment.
  15. To shoot for the stars: Aim high.  To have grand/great ambitions.  Go for the best.
  16. Anecdote:  Story, tale, yarn, sketch, a tall story, a joke.
  17. Here’s the deal: The honest truth.  This is what is happening.  This is what we are going to do.
  18. You know what they say: To understand, predict, or already be familiar with what people utter.
  19. Imaginary friend: Kids invent a fake friend with whom they interact.  Nobody is actually there.

  27. I believe Julia’s on the table: A suggestion, proposal, offer, implication, or has been brought up.
  28. What have you been up to?  What’s new in life?  What’s up?  What’s new?  What’s happening?
  29. Not much: Answer to the question above.  Not much is new in life.  Nothing special.
  30. We’re kind of a thing now: Going out, going steady, and dating.  A couple.
  31. Plugs:  A small hair transplant used by men with a receding hairline.  Also used by bald men.
  32. They haven’t quite taken yet: When something isn’t sturdy or 100% so far.
  33. Orthodontist: A dr. who straightens teeth, places braces, bite plates, and head gear on people.
  34. Title (why is she in the title?):  The family names used for the baby.
  35. Minnie Mouse: Famous female character from Disney movies.  Mickey Mouse’s girlfriend.
  36. Helen Gellar: The name sounds familiar with Helen Keller, a famous deaf American.
  37. The Enterprise: The spaceship used in the TV and movie series Star Trek.
  38. To well-up: Filled with emotion, cry, weep, and freeze-up, sob, blubber, and tears in the eye.
  39. A cheap shot: A low blow.  To say something unfair to someone when they aren’t ready.
