Big thoughts- education systems, reform possibilities

For next week, please prepare to describe and/or demonstrate one or two things you observed that were most impressive, useful, and/or applicable to your teaching. Feel free to work with your observation partner(s) and select the same activities.

Example:
End of class One-on-One Challenge. (observed in 7th grade math class)

A student volunteer stands and selects a classmate to challenge.  The teacher then asks a specific type of question (e.g. multiplication tables). The first student to answer two questions correctly wins.  A third student is assigned to be a ‘floating judge’ to determine who answered first.  Student rankings are adjusted after each match. The winning student then challenges another student.

Adaption: For a language class, the types of questions asked could be related to vocabulary or a grammar form (e.g. past participle).
Pros: Students seemed very eager to do this activity.  It could be used a reward or behavior motivation.  Useful for review.
Cons: Lower ranking student might be embarrassed or demotivated.  Some students didn’t even try to answer the questions.
